The Power of Personal Growth
The Power of Personal Growth:
Evolving Yourself for Success
Knowing others is intelligence. Knowing yourself is true wisdom.
Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power.
- Lao Tzu -
What is personal growth?
It is the ongoing process of understanding and developing oneself in order to achieve one’s fullest potential.
I am down for that!
In today’s world, personal growth education and having a growth mindset are increasingly important with folks who are starting to realise it’s worth due to the rapid pace of change and the complexities that come with living a modern life. Personal growth can have a massive impact on one’s life in building resilience and coping skills, career development, self-awareness and self-esteem, adaptability, improved relationships, conflict resolution, empathy and communication, and mental health benefits. Pretty much, personal growth is essential for thriving in a dynamic, fast-paced world, and by fostering a growth mindset people can achieve greater success, fulfillment and well-being in all areas of their lives.
So, if you haven’t figured it out already, personal growth entails the ongoing process of developing oneself through various means to improve various areas of your life. There are copious amounts of benefits in committing to personal growth habits daily, and it really does not need to take up a lot of your time.
This can simply be achieved by dedicating a small amount of time every day to your personal growth, whether that is spending 10 minutes a day reading a book to develop a new skill or self-help, meditating, gratitude, journaling, exercise, spiritual reflection and online self-paced courses. You will find that just by taking the step in making it a daily habit personal growth starts to have a compounding effect on your life in a good way, and as they say habits are the compound interest of self-improvement.
It's no surprise then to find out that successful people schedule in personal growth as part of their day, here are the top ten things that successful people do in developing a growth mindset:
They dedicate at least 30 minutes to reading
They make time for personal pursuits before work
They have a solid morning routine/practice
They spend focused time each day self-reflecting
They ask themselves powerful questions
They prioritise daily exercise
They organise their time and effort
They take care of themselves
They practice positivity, meditation and gratitude
They visualise and plan their day/week/month/year(s)
Successful people really understand the importance of self-education and being a lifelong learner.
Take an action step today to decide which of these habits you will begin to incorporate into your life. Even if it is for 5 minutes per day, which really is not a huge amount of time in our day, and gradually increase it incrementality.
I dedicate at least 1 hour every morning to meditating, gratitude, self-development reading, planning and visualising my day ahead. In the evenings I commit 1 1/2hours to undertake a self-paced course, exercise, meditate/visualise and self-reflection. The sense of accomplishment and inner connection that I feel just by dedicating time to my personal growth has been life altering for me. I can honestly say that I have fallen in love with who I am at the core, and I am proud of myself for deciding to live a life with purpose.
I find implementing these daily habits to be the most empowering way to move past a fixed mindset into a growth mindset. We have all experienced times in our lives where we believed we were not good enough; this basic fear holds a lot of folks back. But by empowering yourself with personal growth habits you develop a growth mindset, and you will find yourself overcoming that doubt of not feeling good enough, and before you know it you are following through with inspired action moving in the direction of achieving the life you have always desired.
Researchers from a few American Universities analysed the effects of growth mindset and found positive effects on academic outcomes, mental health, and social functioning. Research has also shown that having a growth mindset is linked to greater motivation and increased willingness to attempt new challenges, which is ultimately linked to better performance and a higher chance of achieving success.
This all sounds pretty good, right? So, let’s discuss some of the strategies to evolve your mindset.
I have mentioned self-reflection a couple times now, and there is a reason for that. Self-reflection assists in changing our limiting beliefs. By taking time out everyday to review your day and what you believe you could improve upon will help you to pinpoint the areas you wish to focus on and make a positive difference to. This could be as simple as reflecting on a meeting you had at work and observing with an open mind how you could improve upon your communication. Could you have listened more and talked less, did you not speak up to provide input into the discussion, if you did speak up was your message received the way you wanted, did you actually achieve the outcomes from the meeting that you planned to and if not why not. Basically, looking for ways to continually improve yourself.
Let’s say that you chose to improve your listening skills and make a mental point to focus on this when you are in any future meetings, what will automatically happen is that you become more self-aware, and your communication skills will start to improve. Not a bad outcome at all, wouldn’t you say?
Now imagine for a second that you utilised the tool of self-reflection in all areas of your life as a mechanism to assist you with personal growth. It’s easy to see how you would develop a growth mindset and start to take inspired action to live a more fulfilling life. How different would the world be if we all became lifelong learners in developing our mindset and reaping all the impactful benefits that come with it. Jeez… it really is a win-win situation.
If you were to start prioritising personal growth how differently do you think you would review challenges? Do you believe you would start to see challenges as opportunities for growth?
Everything becomes a learning experience and the opportunity to assess what it is you want to develop.
In one of the self-paced courses that I recently undertook, a true story was presented on exactly this. I’ll refer to the person in the story as Joe.
Joe is someone who has been committed to his personal growth for several years, and Joe had recently purchased a new car, that he happened to park out the front of a community centre he was presenting at. Once the event concluded, Joe came out to find his car had been damaged. Someone had reversed into the back of his car and did not leave a note or any details, the damage wasn’t massive, but it was noticeable.
The average person would have gotten upset about the fact that it was a brand-new car, and that they were going to be out of pocket in getting the car fixed, plus the audacity of the person not leaving their details or a note. But not Joe. Instead, he saw it as a project.
Joe decided to go to his local mechanic to get a quote on fixing his car, the mechanic gave him a cost of around $800. Now Joe did not want to dip into his savings to pay for this, but what he decided to do was to see this as an opportunity to build his business to bring in an extra $800 that month to pay to fix his car. Joe got creative with his business and came up with a couple of different ideas to attract more money, and before you know it within the month, he had made an extra $800 profit. Funny enough, he continued to make an extra $800+ profit per month from then on in. How cool is that! I reckon I could learn a thing or two from Joe.
So, what’s stopping you from committing to personal growth? The usual suspects are the fear of failure, not having enough time and staying in our comfort zone. Humans would have never evolved if we all stayed in our comfort zones. Evolution is a natural part of life; we are either growing and getting better or we remain the same and nothing ever changes. As Gandhi said ‘Be the change you want to see in the world.’ I use this quote as a mantra, especially when I find myself in situations that I am not overly happy with. It really comes down to if you want things to change you need to change.
I have found the best way to overcome fear or not having enough time is to take baby steps.
Commit to 5 mins per day, and gradually build from there. As you start to see the benefits you will become more resilient, more confident and you will find that the fear will just melt away.
Now, personal growth is not going to happen on its own, it is going to require some action on your part. It is important to act, especially inspired action. What is inspired action I hear you ask. Inspired action is aligned to vision you have for yourself, with inspired action you do not have to force yourself to undertake any action instead you want to take the action because you are excited about achieving the outcome that you have envisioned for yourself.
Why should we take any action?
Well, nothing would happen in our world if no one took any action. We would live a rather boring existence and likely the human race would have become extinct. But humans are not designed that way, we are designed to evolve and funny enough whether we like it or not we undertake action every single day - we get out of bed in the morning and prepare for the day, we go to work and get on with our work tasks, we exercise if we wish to get fit and healthy, we eat etc…you get the hint. We take action every day.
Now imagine for second that that action was inspired action, and you were excited about undertaking it. You would look at it a whole different way, you would know that the action you are taking is driving you to achieve bigger and better things in your life, and this makes you even more committed to taking the necessary steps to show up and live a life on purpose.
In order to ensure your action is that of inspired action it is a really good idea to start off with getting your vision clear. Once you have clarity on your vision the next step is to break your vision down into goals. Now you may have several goals come out of your life vision, possibly one for each area of your life. Goals are broken down into tasks that are prioritised, which are broken down into habits. And what is a habit? As mentioned earlier, habits are the compound interest of self-improvement. Everything is intrinsically linked to the greater vision you have for yourself, and this ensures that any action taken is inspired action. Making it waaay easier to do when you have a smile on your face.
Don’t you agree?
Creating the daily habit of putting time aside for personal growth is going to be key to you achieving your life vision. In fact, it is the key to success in all areas of your life. It can’t be said enough that habits are the compound interest of self-improvement, and it can also go the other way that bad habits are the compound interest of no improvement.
Oprah Winfrey is a perfect example of someone who overcame poverty and abuse as a child and went on to become one of the most successful and influential people in the world. She credits her success to her growth mindset and determination to overcome obstacles.
Creating growth mindset habits through inspired action leads to embracing challenges and persisting in the face of setbacks. Despite facing obstacles and setbacks, having a growth mindset propels you to achieve incredible things. By believing in your ability to learn, and grow you will reach your full potential, achieve your goals and transform your life. Your growth mindset has the power to lead you to incredible success and to live a more authentic life.
So what action steps are you going to commit to today? to get the ball rolling to develop your growth mindset? I encourage you to show some love and respect for yourself and start valuing your development through personal growth, cause no one else is going to do it for you.
Remember… Be the change that you want to see in the world.
